GÖG-Colloquium | Advancing Deceased Organ Donation: lessons from the Spanish Model

Beginn der Veranstaltung:21.10.2025, 17:30 Uhr
Ende der Veranstaltung:21.10.2025, 19:00 Uhr
Veranstaltungsort:online via Zoom

The aim of the colloquium is to provide a comprehensive overview of the Spanish model of organ donation and transplantation, which is widely regarded as a global benchmark in this field. The presentation will focus on the effective coordination framework that underpins Spain's success, as well as the innovative strategies that have enabled the country to continuously expand its deceased donor programs. Thanks to these efforts, Spain achieved more than 52 donors per million population in 2024 – the highest rate worldwide.

Particular attention will be given to two transformative initiatives: the integration of intensive care practices to facilitate organ donation as part of end-of-life care (ICOD) and the progres-sive development of donation after circulatory determination of death (DCD). Both programs have proven pivotal in increasing the pool of organs available for transplantation in Spain, with particular emphasis on maintaining high ethical and clinical standards. These initiatives can provide valuable insights into how organ donation rates can also be increased in Austria.

The presenter:
Beatriz Domínguez-Gil is medical doctor, specialist in Nephrology. PhD in medicine and surgery. She joined the National Transplant Organization (ONT) in November 2006 and became its Director General in May 2017. ONT is the Spanish national authority responsible for the oversight, coordination and organization of the donation and clinical use of organs, tissues and cells.  Beatriz Domínguez-Gil is also Chair of the Committee of Transplantation of the Council of Europe (CD-P-TO), President of the Iberoamerican Network/Council on Donation and Trans-plantation (RCIDT) and Member of the WHO Task Force to promote ethical practices in the donation and transplantation of organs, tissues and cells.
